Developmental Milestones: What to Expect in Your Child’s First Year

As your baby grows, they will experience many changes. Look at key developmental milestones you can expect during their first year.

  • 1 to 3 months:

    • Smiling at themselves and others
    • Raising their head and chest when lying on their stomach
    • Tracking movement with their eyes
    • Bringing their hands to their mouth
    • Gripping and reaching for objects
  • 4 to 6 months:

    • Rolling over
    • Babbling and laughing
    • Sitting up with support
    • Improving head control
    • Starting to crawl
  • 7 to 9 months:

    • Sitting without support
    • Responding to familiar words
    • Clapping and playing simple games like peekaboo
    • Pulling up to stand
  • 10 to 12 months:

    • Beginning to self-feed
    • Moving while holding onto furniture
    • Speaking one or two words
    • Pointing at objects for attention
    • Engaging in pretend play
    • Taking first steps

Developmental assessments are an important part of routine well-child visits and should be conducted when your child is 9, 18, and 30 months old. These assessments help track your child's growth and identify concerns early on.
